Best practices for creating your eCommerce website

Think mobile-first

With responsive design becoming the norm, more and more consumers are making their purchases from a mobile phone. In fact, it was reported that in 2015 that mobile commerce was 30% of all U.S. eCommerce purchases. As the world becomes more mobile, websites that prioritize the mobile experience are better placed to capitalize on this opportunity.

Interactive elements tell a richer story

These days it is much easier to create an interactive experience for potential customers coming to your website to shop for your products. From videos to micro-interactions and 360 product shots, these rich experiences go a long way in convincing your customers of your product.

Group products together in sections on your home page

Instead of having all your products listed on your home page, studies have found that by organizing products into natural groups, for example, Women’s wear, it becomes a lot easier for customers to find what they are looking for and subsequently, conversions.

Create product collections

Sometimes, there are some products across different categories that just go well with each other. If this is the case with your products, you can create ‘collections’ of these products. These collections not only inspire customers with new ideas, but also encourage cross-selling.

Analytics that boost performance

Creating a good analytics and reporting system is crucial for good eCommerce performance. By tracking which categories and products are selling well, more attention can be focused on promoting them. It also allows you to learn more about which marketing channels are most effective in generating sales. This in turn enables you to fine-tune your marketing budgets and reduce your cost of acquisition.

A/B Testing

A/B testing suites like Optimizely or Convert.com are increasingly becoming important for websites, especially for eCommerce. They allow you to create different versions of your web pages, showing each version to a predefined proportion of visitors. By using statistical engines, they also tell you which variation performed better. These variations can include things like text, the size and color of things and images. You can even test the placement of different sections of your page!
