Have you ever agonized over which photo from an event best captured the mood of an event? Well, here’s some good news for you. Yesterday, Instagram announced that they are starting to roll out a new feature allowing posts of up to 10 photos & videos. With this update, you will be able to edit each photo/video individually and order them as desired. Here’s how it works:
“When uploading to your feed, you’ll see a new icon to select multiple photos and videos. It’s easy to control exactly how your post will look. You can tap and hold to change the order, apply a filter to everything at once or edit one by one. These posts have a single caption and are square-only for now. On your profile grid, you’ll notice the first photo or video of your post has a little icon, which means there’s more to see.”
This is great news not just for your average party-going youth, but also for small businesses. Here are 3 ways you can start to leverage the new carousel posts for your business.
1. Event posts
The most obvious use of the carousel is to share multiple related photos and videos from your event. This is great because you wouldn’t risk annoying your followers with a flood of posts in short succession on their timelines. It also allows a much higher fidelity for events that are time-sensitive, giving you the greatest bang for your buck.
Carousels will also allow you to tell much richer stories, the same way some brands have been using the aptly named Instagram Stories. Since the new post type allows you to sequence photos and videos, you can tell the story of how a cake was made from ingredients to the plate through a series of pictures and videos.

How-to videos are huge on YouTube, but it will definitely become a thing on Instagram too with carousel posts. The possibilities are endless – for example, the various ways of using a product, or DIY-ing.
