A search engine is not a telephone directory

Modern search engines work differently. So-called “crawlers” or “spiders” pass by your website and collect and process as much information as possible. Over time, this information slowly shows up in search engine results.
If you have a new website, you can speed up this process by nudging their crawlers manually. Bing and Google will gladly help you out with a form where you can enter your domain. Do take into account that it might still take some weeks before you see any results.
Why is it important to score high on a search engine?
After a week or three, when you’re “googling” yourself, you might find your website on page four, which is decent, but far from perfect.
According to “Google Click-Through Rates in 2017 by Ranking Position” from Ignite Visibility, the first 3 positions on a google search get 46,96 % of the clicks:
- Position 1 – 20.5%
- Position 2 – 13.32%
- Position 3 – 13.14%
This means that for almost half of all searches, people click one of the first three search results. So, if your website is listed somewhere on page four, you will hardly get any clicks.
So how do you get a higher ranking?
There are several things you can do to improve your search engine ranking. Most important is the content of your site; it needs to be relevant for people visiting your site. In addition, your content needs to be presented in a way that the search engine crawlers understand. Having your site mentioned in social media or other locations will also have a positive effect.
