Have you met File Manager?

“I think File Manager is great because it saves you the hassle of using FTP.”

In this post, I want to put the spotlight on File Manager, one of the lesser known One.com applications included in your subscription. With File Manager, you can easily administrate your web space files directly in your browser. Let’s have a look at some of the features the make File Manager a great tool.

Upload and download files and folders

With File Manager, you can upload files and folders directly in your browser. This may not seem a very important feature, considering you can also use FTP. However, I think File Manager is great because it saves you the hassle of using FTP. If you use File Manager you don’t need to install an FTP client on your computer. Instead, you can drag files, or complete folders from your computer into File Manager over a secure SSL connection.

Edit files directly in your browser

With the built-in editor, you can edit code directly in your browser. It features both syntax highlighting and autocomplete. You are also able to collapse sections that start with comments, to hide code that might not matter at that moment. Simply open File Manager in the One.com control panel, edit the file and save.
You can also create special files, like .htaccess, which is very useful if you need to protect your site with a password. Create a “New other file” in File Manager, and then save it as .htaccess.

Create a backup of your web space

It only takes a minute to make a backup of your whole web space with File Manager. Just select all files and folders and click “Download” to save them as a .zip file on your computer. Check our guide for step-by-step instructions: Backup your web space with File Manager.

Preview images

You can preview your image files in File Manager. Instead of seeing only the file name, you can see thumbnails of the actual image, which makes it easy to select which files you want to show on your site.

Create and rename files and folders

You can not only edit, but also create new files in File Manager. This can be handy if you want to create, for example, a temporary front page with a seasonal message. Create a copy of your existing front page, edit the text and save your changes. Then rename your standard front page so that it won’t show up on your website, for example to normal-index.html.

Use File Manager on mobile devices

File Manager is also available in a mobile version, giving you access to your web space files on the go. The built-in editor doesn’t work in mobile, but you can download a file to your device, and edit it with an app of your choice.

File Manager may not be able to replace your local text editor and FTP client entirely, but we believe it is a great addition and deserves a spot among your favourite tools.
