What WordPress 4.3 “Billie” Means For You

WordPress 4.3 Header
Named in honor of New York jazz singer Billie Holiday, version 4.3 of WordPress is now available for download. Here’s a quick look at some of its exciting features and how that would improve your blogging experience.

Editor Enhancements

At One.com, we’re big fans of using MarkDown which make it possible to format your text while typing without using the mouse. “Billie” now builds this functionality into the visual editor without having to install a plugin.

For example, to create a H2 heading, you just need to put two hash (#) keys before the heading like such:

You can also make both ordered and unordered lists with *, -, 1. and 1), as well as blockquotes by starting a line with >

Adding Site Icons/Favicons

You can now add a favicon to your site/blog. They are the little icons that appear in browser tabs, bookmark menus and on the home screen of mobile devices. All you have to do is to go into the Customize/Site Identity in the admin panel and you can upload it.

Menus in the customizer

Speaking of the customizer, menus are now included so users can also now add and edit the navigation menus from the customizer itself with a live preview that makes things much simpler. It is also available from the customizer menu.

Improved Passwords

While we’ve strongly recommended password managers such as Last Pass in the past, we know that many people still keep to default passwords. WordPress 4.3 now has improved on their approach. Instead of emailing a password to a user, WordPress will send a password reset link. A secure password is also generated each time a new user is added.

Other under the hood improvements

On top of the above updates, the WordPress team has also made some other changes and refinements

  • Changes to the list view now smoothen the admin experience on mobiles and tablets
  • Comments on pages are turned off by default, a plus in my opinion as I always thought it was weird to go to an about page with comments from several years ago

We hope you like the overview of what WordPress 4.3 “Billie” has in store – it’s already available for download, but make sure all your plugins are compatible before you take the plunge. We are most excited about the enhanced editor. What about you?
